What Do I Do If My Insert Turns Black? 

If your insert is turning black, it has excess residue on it. Try swabbing it clean. If the residue is baked into it, then it will need to be soaked in ISO. 

If the residue is 100% and it is still sooty, the tiniest amount of heat can help remove this; too much and it can crack your insert.
